Pergolas are a popular choice for enhancing outdoor spaces, providing both aesthetic appeal and functional benefits. Whether you're considering adding a pergola to your garden or patio, or creating an outdoor cooking area with one of our outdoor kitchens, you probably have some questions.
Here are the answers to 10 of the most frequently asked questions about our pergolas.
1) What is a Pergola?
A pergola is an outdoor structure consisting of vertical posts or pillars that support crossbeams and an open lattice. Unlike a fully enclosed gazebo, pergolas offer partial shade and can be adorned with climbing plants or fabrics to enhance their appearance and functionality. It can be used to create a shaded walkway, a cosy seating area, or an elegant dining space.
2) What Are the Benefits of Having a Pergola?
Pergolas are an increasingly popular addition to outdoor spaces, offering a perfect blend of functionality and beauty. A pergola provides a wide range of benefits including:
- Protection from Sun: Pergolas provide partial shade, reducing the intensity of direct sunlight while still allowing for some natural light.
- Weather Protection: Some pergolas can be equipped with retractable roofs or side panels, offering additional protection from light rain and wind, thereby extending the usability of your outdoor space.
- Increased Property Value: A pergola can increase the curb appeal of your home, making it more attractive to potential buyers.
- Customisation: With a wide range of designs, materials, and colours available, pergolas can be customised to match the style of your home and garden.
- Multi-Functional Spaces: With the right furniture and accessories, a pergola can be transformed into various functional spaces, such as a lounge area, an outdoor kitchen, or a play area for children.
- Focal Point: A pergola can serve as a stunning focal point in your outdoor area, drawing the eye and creating a defined space for gatherings, relaxation, or decoration.
3) Where can a Pergola be installed?
Choosing the right location for its installation is crucial to ensure its stability, longevity, and overall effectiveness. The most recommended and reliable option for installing a pergola is a concrete base. Concrete provides a solid and stable foundation that can securely anchor the structure, ensuring it remains upright and stable even in adverse weather conditions. This type of base minimises the risk of the pergola shifting or tilting over time.
4) Can I Install a Pergola Myself?
Yes, you can! Our pergolas come with a fixing kit and instructions for assembly. If you have basic carpentry skills and tools, you can install a pergola yourself. However, if you prefer a hassle-free experience, we also offer professional build services.

5) Does Rainwater Sit on Top of the Pergola Roof?
No, rainwater does not sit on top of the pergola roof. The pergola features an intelligent built-in drainage system. This system automatically directs the rainwater down through the inside of the legs and out through an outlet, which drains the water into the ground. Therefore, there is no need to open the louvres to drain any excess rainwater.
6) Are Your Pergolas 100% Weatherproof?
Yes, our pergolas are designed to withstand various weather conditions. They are built with 100% weather-resistant materials, ensuring durability for long-term use. The high-quality aluminium construction is UV-protected, which prevents fading and shields you and your family from harmful UV rays.
The roof features tilting louvres, that you can easily open or close either manually or electronically depending on which pergola you select. When closed, the louvres create a sheltered space, while opening them lets in sunlight. With Maze Pergolas, you can comfortably enjoy your outdoor space, regardless of the unpredictable British weather.
7) Do Pergolas Need Planning Permission?
Generally, pergolas do not require planning permission since they are not considered permanent structures. They are typically secured to an existing surface rather than being cemented below ground, allowing for easy disassembly and relocation if necessary. However, it is always best to discuss planning requirements when choosing your pergola.
Here are some important considerations:
Height and Proximity to Boundaries: If the pergola is within 2 meters of the property boundary, its maximum height should not exceed 2.5 meters (8'2"). Although it is best to place pergolas away from property boundaries to avoid infringing on neighbouring properties, this is not essential if the pergola is placed on a natural surface.
Front of the House: Planning permission may be required if the pergola is to be installed at the front of your house.
Conservation Areas and Listed Buildings: If you live in a conservation area, or if your property is a listed building, planning permission will be required. Similarly, if the structure is to be installed on the side of your house between the house and the boundary, permission is necessary.
Verandas, Balconies, or Raised Platforms: Adding a pergola to a veranda, balcony, or raised platform may require planning permission due to the increased height and must comply with Building Regulations.
If you are unsure, it is recommended to consult with your local planning authority. Additionally, discussing your plans with neighbours can help avoid potential conflicts regarding sight lines and property boundaries.
8) Can I Customise My Pergola?
Certainly! You have a wide range of options when it comes to customising your pergola to suit your needs and preferences. For instance, you can add heaters to extend the use of your outdoor space into the cooler months, ensuring comfort regardless of the weather.
Privacy blinds are another great option, providing a sense of seclusion and shielding your space from prying eyes or harsh sunlight. Additionally, louvre panels offer flexibility in controlling the amount of light and ventilation, allowing you to create the perfect ambiance and climate within your pergola. These customisation options can transform your pergola into a more functional and enjoyable space tailored to your lifestyle.
9) How Do I Maintain a Pergola?
The maintenance required for your pergola largely depends on the material it’s made from. For instance, our aluminium powder-coated pergolas are designed to be low-maintenance. They don’t require much upkeep beyond occasional cleaning to remove dirt and debris.
If you prefer the classic look of wood but don’t want the hassle of regular maintenance, consider our wood-effect aluminium pergolas. These offer the aesthetic appeal of wood with the durability and easy care of aluminium, so you get the best of both worlds without the frequent upkeep associated with real wood.
10) How Do I Choose the Right Pergola for My Space?
To choose the right pergola for your space, start by considering the size of your outdoor area to ensure the pergola will fit comfortably without overwhelming the space. Next, think about your style preferences and select a design that complements your home and garden.
Additionally, choose between a freestanding pergola, which can be placed anywhere in your garden, or an attached pergola, which connects to a wall or structure. Lean-to pergolas are excellent space savers because they extend off your home, making efficient use of your outdoor area and creating a more intimate, sheltered environment.
